Stand up Slowly
Even if your senior has only been sitting down for a few minutes, taking her time getting up helps to ensure that she doesn’t accidentally make herself dizzy. When your elderly family member has been lying down, remind her to slowly sit up and hold that position for a few seconds before attempting to stand.
Give Assistive Devices a Chance
Many aging adults don’t appreciate having to use assistive devices like canes or walkers. The bottom line is that these tools are mean to help your senior to keep her balance and to assist her in her movements. Avoiding using these because she doesn’t like them can set her up for a fall. Try finding a device that she does like, if possible.
Let Other People Help
Having assistance from you or from home care providers can also keep your senior from falling as she’s getting up or maneuvering around her home. Sometimes this can be as frustrating for aging adults as assistive devices are because they make her feel less independent. Remind your senior that you’re happy to help and that this is about helping her to stay safe.
Hold Hand Rails When Available
Encourage your senior to use hand rails whenever they’re available. These are especially helpful in the bathroom, but you can install hand rails anywhere in your senior’s house. All you need is plenty of wall space and the right anchors to secure the rails to the wall safely.
Avoid Taking Risks
Above all, you want to encourage your loved one to avoid taking risks that she doesn’t need to take. Standing on a chair to retrieve something that’s heavy or hurrying when she doesn’t have to can be a really dangerous situation. Encourage your senior to take her time and to avoid taking risks when it isn’t necessary for her to do so.
Some of these habits may be more difficult for your elderly family member to adjust than others are. Keep in mind that there may be other changes she should make, depending on her unique situation. Talk with your senior’s doctor to get full recommendations on habits she might need to break or adjust.
