If you’re new to caregiving, you might not have a care team yet. This is a group of people and resources that can save your sanity as a caregiver.
Friends and Family Definitely Count
Many caregivers overlook the fact that friends and family often can and want to help out with their elderly family member’s ongoing care. If you’ve been waiting to ask for help because you don’t want to be a burden or you think it’s just weird, you might be surprised at the reaction you’d get. Asking for help from the people that you love can get you so much in return.
Figure out What Else You Need
One reason that caregiving can feel so overwhelming is that you don’t really know what all you need at any given moment. So take the time to sit down with a blank piece of paper and make a list of what you know already you need help doing. Write down everything that comes to mind, even if it seems silly. The thing is, someone can probably help you, even with the tiniest task. And if that’s all that they can do for you that makes them feel helpful to you as well.
Not Everyone Can Help All the Time
If you’re hearing “no” even a little bit, that can make you feel self-conscious. But the thing is, not everyone can help all the time. They may not even be able to help with what you’re specifically asking of them. But at another time or with another task, they may be your perfect helper. Don’t let “no” stop you. Keep on going.
Try Splitting up Bigger Tasks
Bigger tasks might seem like a stumbling block at first, but they don’t have to be. Break them down into smaller tasks and groups of tasks. Now you can delegate them to multiple people and you’d be amazed at how much you can get done then.
Don’t Forget about Elder Care Providers
Elder care providers have a lot of experience helping families and aging adults on their caregiving journey. Take advantage of their experience and get the help that you need filling in the areas that are still overwhelming.
If you don’t already have a care time, it’s not too late. Start figuring out now who can do what and build your team from there.
