elderly man out for walk in wheelchair with grandchildWhen an older adult relies on a wheelchair to get around, the chair can feel like an extension of their personality. Unfortunately, most wheelchairs aren’t terribly attractive right off the factory floor. Their utilitarian looks may not be an accurate reflection of your feisty mom’s sparkling personality. If that’s the case, this is the perfect month to change the way your aging relative’s wheelchair works because it’s National Wheelchair Beautification Month. Below are 6 ways caregivers can help older adults to beautify their wheelchairs.

Change Up the Cushion
Add a spark of color or a lively pattern that says who the older adult is by making a custom wheelchair cushion or cushion cover. Caregivers can take older adults to a fabric store to choose their favorite fabric. If you don’t sew, you can also purchase different wheelchair cushions online.

Add Colorful Flowers
Caregivers can easily add a small vase of flowers to a wheelchair by adhering a plastic vase or water tube to the wheelchair. If you use removable bands to attach the vase, you can fill it with real flowers since you’ll be able to empty stale water and replace it with fresh. Otherwise, fill the vase with silk flowers.

Use Stickers
Turn the older adult’s wheelchair into a rolling sticker collection. Encourage the senior to pick out stickers they like to be placed on the chair. Grandchildren and other loved ones can get involved in building the older adult’s sticker collection by looking for ones they don’t have yet.

Customize the Wheels
Some retailers offer beautiful spoke guard covers for wheelchair wheels. They allow seniors to add some art that says who they are.

Light Up Their World
You can purchase lights made especially for wheelchairs. Not only are they pretty, but they can keep the senior safer if they are outside at night. Caregivers can search online for wheelchair lights and assist the senior to choose the ones they like.

Jazz it Up with Ribbons and Streamers
Caregivers can attach ribbons in the older adult’s favorite colors to the wheelchair. Or, you could use colorful streamers to decorate the chair for holidays. Get red, white, and blue streamers for Independence Day. Try red and green for Christmas. Or, use pretty pastels for Easter.

Make a Lap Cover
While not exactly part of the wheelchair, a beautiful lap cover can show your aging relative’s personality and also keep them warm. You can knit or crochet a cover using soft yarns. Or, if you like to sew, make a lap-sized quilt with colorful fabrics.
